Engineering and Construction Technologies

Trained as an engineer, architect or builder abroad and ready to practise the Canadian way? Engineering and Construction Technologies is a 16-month post-graduate diploma at RRC Polytech’s Notre Dame Campus in Winnipeg, created for people who already hold a diploma or degree in an architectural, engineering or construction field.

The first term translates your existing knowledge into Canadian practice through Building Codes and Standards, Site Investigation, Project Documentation and Emerging Technologies, Communication for the Workplace and Advising and Professional Practice, together with WHMIS and General Safety Training. Term 2 adds Project Administration, Inclusive Workplace Environments and Capstone 1, with an elective in either Applied Structural Technology or Applied Infrastructure Technology. After co-op, the final term covers Ethics and Canadian Contract Law and Capstone 2.

Learning is hands-on and project-based, focused on the structural and infrastructure sides of civil engineering technology and related architectural technologies, and the capstones partner you with industry on projects that solve current problems. Students work with Revit, Building Information Modelling tools and Microsoft Office 365 on their own Windows laptops. Advising and Professional Practice includes WHMIS and SiteReadyMB certification. The programme also builds awareness of Indigenous history, reconciliation and workplace inclusion, and the third term is six months of paid co-op in the Canadian construction and engineering sector.

Graduates typically move into roles such as civil engineering technologist, structural drafting technologist, construction project coordinator, site inspector, building code reviewer and infrastructure project technologist. It suits internationally educated professionals who want Canadian workplace experience, local references and a working knowledge of Manitoba codes and contracts.
