Mechanical Engineering Technology

Ever wondered who works out how a combine harvester, an aircraft bracket or a building’s ventilation system is actually made? RRC Polytech’s Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma trains the technologists who do exactly that. It runs for 28 months at the Notre Dame Campus in northwest Winnipeg, weaving five in-college terms together with two paid co-op terms, and admits one cohort each September.

Year 1 starts with Engineering Design 1, Engineering Materials, Mechatronics, Algebra & Trigonometry, Physical Science and Technical Communication, then moves to Fluid Mechanics, Basics of Manufacturing, Quality Inspection, Engineering Design 2, Calculus and Electrical /Electronic Fundamentals. Year 2 deepens the engineering with Computer Aided Design, Numerical Methods/Programming, Applied Mechanics, Fluid Power, Instrumentation and Control and Fabrication Methods, followed by Machine Design, Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, Tool Design, Air Conditioning 1 and Project Management & Economics. The final term brings the Engineering Tech Project and Applied Statistics plus a specialty elective such as Aerospace Technology, Metallurgy, Industrial Process Control or Noise, Vibration & Balancing.

Labs at Notre Dame put CNC milling and turning, a punch press, coordinate measuring machines, an optical comparator, programmable logic controllers and finite element analysis software in your hands. Mechanical Engineering Co-Op terms in Term 3 and Term 6 place you in paid industrial jobs. The diploma is accredited by the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba and the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists, and graduates can transfer credit to Lakehead University’s Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Memorial University’s Bachelor of Technology or Athabasca University, with an articulation agreement at the University of Manitoba Price Faculty of Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering Technology graduates work as mechanical design technologists, mechanical drafters, quality inspectors, manufacturing technologists, HVAC design technicians and technical sales representatives in aerospace, agriculture, fluid power, mining and consulting engineering. It suits a student who enjoys physics and maths and wants to see designs become real parts.
