Program overview
The Floral Design certificate is an eight-month program in professional floristry.
Content covers flower and foliage identification and care, design principles and colour theory applied to floral work, hand-tied bouquets and arrangements, wedding and event floristry including installations, sympathy and tribute work, seasonal and holiday design, mechanics and construction techniques, purchasing and wholesale sourcing, pricing and costing for profitability, retail shop operations, and business practice for florists, with a field placement.
Pricing and costing is the content that determines whether a floral career is viable. Flowers are perishable inventory with volatile wholesale pricing, and florists who cannot cost a wedding accurately lose money on their best-looking work. Wedding and event floristry is where the margins are, and it is largely a small-business and freelance market.
The field placement is a graded part of the program, so you finish with documented Canadian experience and a referee rather than only a transcript.
Newnham is Seneca’s largest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, with its own residence, library, athletic centre and specialised technical labs. It sits on the TTC network with subway connections, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology and engineering catalogue — which means the widest range of student clubs, services and peers of any Seneca site.
Seneca Polytechnic — formerly Seneca College — is one of Ontario’s largest public colleges and a Designated Learning Institution. Newnham is its biggest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology, engineering technology, aviation and applied science catalogue. It has its own residence, a large library and athletic centre, and sits on the TTC network with connections to the subway.
Its field maps to CIP 01.0608 (Floriculture and floristry). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Seneca publishes a PGWP-eligible program list; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.
What it costs per year · indicative
Living cost is an estimate; tuition is the institute's published international fee. We confirm exact, current figures before you pay anything.
Do you qualify?
These are the published minimums. Whether your profile fits — with your marks, gap and budget — is exactly what a free counsellor check confirms.

Career opportunities
Floristry is largely a small-business and event-driven market:
- Floral Designer — retail flower shops
- Wedding and Event Florist — the highest-margin segment
- Floral Shop Manager — retail operations
- Wholesale Floral Representative — supplier and distribution roles
- Event Installation Designer — large-scale floral installations
- Freelance Florist — independent practice
- Floral Business Owner — own shop or studio
Costing skill decides profitability in this trade — beautiful work priced wrong still loses money.
