Program overview
The Honours Bachelor of Child Development is a four-year co-op degree in early childhood development at degree level — a step beyond the Early Childhood Education diploma in both depth and career ceiling.
Coursework covers child development from prenatal through middle childhood, developmental psychology and theory, observation and assessment methods, curriculum design and pedagogical leadership, children with exceptionalities and inclusive practice, family systems and parent engagement, child and family policy in Canada, Indigenous perspectives in early learning, mental health in early childhood, research methods and statistics, program evaluation, and leadership and administration of early years programs, with co-op work terms.
The degree opens roles the diploma does not: program supervision, resource consulting, policy work and graduate study. Ontario’s childcare expansion under national funding has created sustained demand for qualified early years professionals, and as a degree the program is exempt from the PGWP field-of-study restriction.
Placement requires a police vulnerable sector check and, in most settings, immunisation records and CPR certification. Students who cannot clear these cannot be placed, so arrange them early.
Newnham is Seneca’s largest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, with its own residence, library, athletic centre and specialised technical labs. It sits on the TTC network with subway connections, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology and engineering catalogue — which means the widest range of student clubs, services and peers of any Seneca site.
Seneca Polytechnic — formerly Seneca College — is one of Ontario’s largest public colleges and a Designated Learning Institution. Newnham is its biggest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology, engineering technology, aviation and applied science catalogue. It has its own residence, a large library and athletic centre, and sits on the TTC network with connections to the subway.
Its field maps to CIP 19.0706 (Child development). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.
