Program overview
The Honours Bachelor of Data Science and Analytics is a four-year co-op degree combining statistics, programming and domain application.
Coursework covers calculus and linear algebra, probability and statistical inference, programming in Python and R, data structures and algorithms, database systems and SQL, data wrangling and feature engineering, machine learning and predictive modelling, deep learning fundamentals, data visualisation and communication, big data technologies and distributed processing, data ethics and privacy, experimental design, and a capstone project, with co-op work terms.
The statistical depth is what distinguishes a degree from a short analytics certificate. Certificate graduates can build models; degree graduates understand when a model is wrong, why an experiment is invalid and how to defend a conclusion — which is what separates analysts from senior data scientists. As a degree it is also exempt from the PGWP field-of-study restriction.
Co-op is a built-in part of this degree, so you graduate with paid Canadian work terms already on your resume rather than competing for a first role with no local experience.
Newnham is Seneca’s largest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, with its own residence, library, athletic centre and specialised technical labs. It sits on the TTC network with subway connections, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology and engineering catalogue — which means the widest range of student clubs, services and peers of any Seneca site.
Seneca Polytechnic — formerly Seneca College — is one of Ontario’s largest public colleges and a Designated Learning Institution. Newnham is its biggest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology, engineering technology, aviation and applied science catalogue. It has its own residence, a large library and athletic centre, and sits on the TTC network with connections to the subway.
Its field maps to CIP 30.7001 (Data science). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.
