Continuing Care Assistant

Could you be the steady, familiar face that helps an older resident start the day with dignity? Suncrest College’s full-time Continuing Care Assistant programme prepares you for exactly that work. This Winter 2027 intake runs for 32 weeks from February to December at Suncrest’s Yorkton campus, and graduates receive a Saskatchewan Polytechnic certificate.

Term one builds the core of care work through ANAT 100 Body Systems, SPCR 106 Introduction to Caregiving, SPCR 104 Personal Care 1 and SPCR 105 Personal Care 2, where you practise bathing, mobility and daily living support. SPCR 101 Observing, Reporting, and Recording teaches you to document changes accurately, DEMC 100 Dementia Care covers responsive approaches to memory loss, and COMM 197 Helping Skills, COMM 291 Interpersonal Communications and SPCR 192 Personal Competence shape how you speak with residents and families. Term two adds SPCR 108 Special Procedures, SPCR 102 End of Life Care, SPCR 107 Community Care, SPCR 284 Special Needs 1, SPCR 285 Special Needs 2, HUMD 187 Human Growth and Development and SOCI 160 Foundations of Sociology.

Classroom learning in Yorkton is paired with two supervised clinical courses, CLIN 100 Clinical 1 - Special Care and CLIN 219 Clinical 2 - Special Care, completed over about six weeks in long-term care facilities alongside experienced CCAs and your instructor. Before clinicals you complete Professional Assault Response Training (PART) Intermediate, Transferring, Lifting and Repositioning (TLR), WHMIS GHS, N95 mask fit testing and Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, so you arrive on the unit already certified. Yorkton CCA graduates work as continuing care assistants, special care aides and home health aides in long-term care homes, home care, private care homes, acute care, supportive housing and special needs classrooms.
