One third of Vancouver Community College’s Broadway campus is not really about VCC at all. Six of its 18 international programmes exist to move you into a bachelor degree somewhere else: four one-year university transfer certificates and two associate degrees.
That makes Broadway a fundamentally different proposition from VCC’s Downtown campus. Downtown trains you for a job. Broadway trains you for a job or bridges you toward a university others will grant the degree.
Getting that distinction wrong is expensive, because VCC requires a CAD 10,000 non-refundable deposit and permits no change of programme or intake once an offer is issued.
⚠️ If you are considering a transfer route, read Section 4 first. A university transfer certificate is worth exactly as much as the credits a receiving university will accept. Confirm that in writing, from the university rather than the college, before you pay anything.

1. The Broadway Campus
Broadway is one of VCC’s two campuses in Vancouver, British Columbia. The college is public, holds DLI number O19279717512, and was established in 1965.
| Broadway | Downtown |
|---|---|
| 18 programmes | 21 programmes |
| Trades, health, music, university transfer, ESL | Baking, beauty, fashion, jewellery, business, computing |
| Has the only degree at VCC | Has the three post-degree diplomas |
| Has both ESL pathways | No ESL provision |
| Fees CAD 14,277 to 27,330 | Fees CAD 13,152 to 27,830 |
Neither campus offers student housing. Read our full Vancouver Community College guide for the college-wide picture, including the deposit policy and living costs.
2. All 18 Broadway Programmes
| Cluster | Programmes | Count |
|---|---|---|
| University transfer | Arts, Science, Engineering, Computing Science and Software Systems certificates; Associate Degree in Science; Associate of Science in Computer Science | 6 |
| Trades | Automotive Repair and Refinishing; High Performance and Custom Engine; Heavy Mechanical Technology; Electronics Repair Technology | 4 |
| Health support | Health Care Assistant; Occupational and Physical Therapist Assistant | 2 |
| Music | College Diploma in Music; Bachelor of Applied Music | 2 |
| Culinary | Culinary Arts diploma; Asian Culinary Arts certificate | 2 |
| ESL | ESL Pathway; ESL Pathway Advanced | 2 |
3. The Trades Cluster
Four Broadway programmes teach mechanical and electronic trades, and they are the reason many students choose this campus over Downtown.
| Programme | Fee (CAD) | IELTS | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automotive Repair and Refinishing | 20,240 | 5.5 | Includes work experience |
| High Performance and Custom Engine | 18,975 | 6.0 | A rare specialism in Canada |
| Heavy Mechanical Technology | 20,184 | 5.5 | Mining, forestry and construction demand |
| Electronics Repair Technology | 21,374 | 6.0 | TOEFL 83, a band of its own |
Two of these accept IELTS 5.5, which is the lowest English requirement at this campus and reflects training delivered largely through workshop practice.
The honest counterweight on heavy mechanical work: much of it in British Columbia is remote or camp based, supporting mining and forestry sites rather than city workshops. That suits some students well and genuinely does not suit others.
4. University Transfer and Associate Degrees
This is the largest cluster at Broadway and the least understood. Six programmes exist to generate university credit rather than to qualify you for work.
| Route | Length | Fee (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer Certificate, Arts | 1 year | 19,329 |
| Transfer Certificate, Science | 1 year | 19,329 |
| Transfer Certificate, Computing Science and Software Systems | 1 year | 22,391 |
| Transfer Certificate, Engineering | 1 year | 26,869 |
| Associate Degree, Science | 2 years | 19,936 |
| Associate of Science, Computer Science | 2 years | 23,995 |
The associate degrees are the stronger option for most people. They carry two years of credit rather than one, and unlike a transfer certificate an associate degree is a recognised credential in its own right. If the transfer falls through, you still hold something. Compare the Associate of Science in Computer Science at CAD 23,995 against the one-year Computing transfer certificate at CAD 22,391: for roughly CAD 1,600 more you get double the credit and a standalone qualification.
5. Health Support Programmes
Two Broadway diplomas lead into British Columbia health care, and both carry conditions decided by a regulator rather than the college.
The Health Care Assistant diploma at CAD 23,894 includes a clinical practicum. Working requires listing on the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry, plus a criminal record check and immunisation records. It also carries the most unusual English rule at VCC: Duolingo is refused entirely, and you need speaking and listening at 6.0 specifically, because the work depends on spoken communication with vulnerable people.
The Occupational and Physical Therapist Assistant diploma at CAD 27,017 is the most expensive programme at this campus and asks the highest English bar: IELTS 6.5 with writing and speaking at 6.5. Rehabilitation assistants work under the direction of registered therapists, so this is a supporting role rather than independent practice.
6. Music, and the Only Degree at VCC
Broadway holds the Bachelor of Applied Music, the only degree VCC offers to international students. It is a two-year completion requiring a completed diploma and 70 percent, making it the only programme at the entire college asking more than 50 percent.
The honest counterweight: performance work is freelance and irregular, and nearly all working musicians combine playing with teaching from the outset.
7. The Two ESL Pathways
Both ESL pathways at VCC sit at Broadway, and they need care.
| Programme | Length | Fee (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| ESL Pathway | 3 months | 27,330 |
| ESL Pathway Advanced | 3 months | 14,277 |
8. Broadway Admission Requirements
| You need | Programmes |
|---|---|
| Grade 10 | 2, both culinary |
| Class 12 | 15, the trades, transfer, health and ESL routes |
| A completed diploma | 1, the Bachelor of Applied Music |
Seventeen of the 18 programmes ask 50 percent. Only the Bachelor of Applied Music asks 70. No GMAT or GRE is required anywhere.
9. Broadway English Requirements
Broadway runs eight distinct English bands across just 18 programmes, so the college-wide figures you see elsewhere are not enough to apply on.
| Band | Rows | IELTS | TOEFL | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 8 | 6.5, none below 6.0 | 80 | 115 |
| Lower, trades and culinary | 4 | 5.5, none below 5.0 | 50 or 60 | 95 |
| Health Care Assistant | 1 | 6.0, speaking and listening 6.0 | 76 | NOT accepted |
| Rehabilitation Assistant | 1 | 6.5, writing and speaking 6.5 | 90 | 120 |
| Electronics and one other | 2 | 6.0, none below 5.5 or 6.0 | 70 or 83 | 105 |
| ESL pathways | 2 | No test required | No test | No test |
10. Broadway Fees and the Deposit
Tuition at Broadway runs from CAD 14,277 to CAD 27,330, with most two-year diplomas between CAD 18,000 and 24,000. A CAD 145 application fee applies to every programme.
Vancouver is among Canada’s most expensive cities and VCC has no student housing at either campus. Budget CAD 18,000 to 27,000 a year for living costs on top of tuition.
11. Broadway Intakes
Across the 18 programmes there are 112 recorded entry windows spanning ten months of the year.
| Intake | Programmes |
|---|---|
| September | All 18 |
| January | 13 |
| May | 7 |
| April and seven further months | Smaller numbers |
September appears on every Broadway programme, and 13 of 18 also run January. The constraint is seat capacity rather than deadlines, since workshop and clinical placements are finite. Apply eight to twelve months ahead.
12. PGWP Position by Programme
| Programmes | Count | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Applied Music | 1 | Exempt from the field of study test |
| Diplomas, certificates and transfer routes | 15 | Non-degree, so the field of study requirement applies |
| ESL pathways | 2 | No work permit at all |
13. Regulated Occupations and Trades Certification
| Programme | What still stands in the way |
|---|---|
| Health Care Assistant | BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry listing, criminal record check, immunisation records |
| Automotive and Heavy Mechanical | British Columbia trade certification, requiring apprenticeship hours and examination beyond the diploma |
| Rehabilitation Assistant | Works under the supervision of registered occupational or physical therapists. Not independent practice |
| University transfer routes | Admission to the receiving university, which VCC cannot guarantee. Confirm credits and requirements with that university in writing |
14. How to Apply to VCC Broadway
Applying through the Apply Study Visa portal is free, and at VCC that review earns its place because the deposit structure punishes mistakes heavily.
- Confirm the campus. Broadway and Downtown carry different programmes. Applying to the wrong one wastes the CAD 145 application fee at minimum.
- If it is a transfer route, we contact the receiving university first, before anything else, to confirm credits and admission requirements in writing.
- We check your band scores, not just your overall, because two Broadway programmes require specific skill scores and one refuses Duolingo.
- We confirm the work permit position in writing before any deposit, since 15 of 18 programmes face the field of study requirement.
- Only then do we advise on the deposit, and we guide you through the letter of acceptance, the provincial attestation letter, funds documentation and the study permit using DLI O19279717512.
Check your eligibility free, or read our GIC account guide if funds are your next step.

15. Is Broadway the Right Campus for You?
Choose Broadway if you want mechanical or electronic trades, health support work, music, or a bridge toward a British Columbia university degree. Choose Downtown if you want baking, beauty, fashion, jewellery, business or computing.
Broadway suits you if
- You want a trade and can accept that provincial certification takes further hours beyond the diploma.
- You are using VCC as a bridge to a university degree and have written confirmation from the receiving university.
- You want the one degree at VCC and hold a music diploma at 70 percent.
- Your English is around IELTS 5.5 and you want the trades or culinary routes.
- You can fund Vancouver living costs without relying on part time work.
Broadway does not suit you if
- You want beauty, fashion, jewellery or business. Those sit at Downtown.
- You are considering an ESL pathway without a confirmed programme to follow it.
- You need certainty on your work permit. Only 1 of 18 programmes gives that.
- Your finances are tight. The deposit alone is non-refundable at CAD 10,000.
- You need campus accommodation. VCC has none.
16. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What programmes does VCC Broadway offer international students?
Eighteen: 6 university transfer and associate routes, 4 trades, 2 health support, 2 music, 2 culinary and 2 ESL pathways. The other 21 VCC programmes sit at the Downtown campus.
Q: What is the difference between VCC Broadway and Downtown?
Broadway carries trades, health, music, university transfer and ESL, plus the college’s only degree. Downtown carries baking, beauty, fashion, jewellery, business, computing and the three post-degree diplomas. Neither has student housing.
Q: Are VCC university transfer certificates worth it?
Only if the credits transfer. VCC cannot guarantee admission elsewhere, so get written confirmation from the receiving university on which courses transfer, how many credits and what average is required. The associate degrees carry two years of credit and are a credential in their own right, which makes them the safer choice.
Q: What are VCC Broadway fees?
CAD 14,277 to CAD 27,330. The cheapest is the ESL Pathway Advanced, then the Music diploma at CAD 16,439. The most expensive is the ESL Pathway at CAD 27,330, then the Rehabilitation Assistant diploma at CAD 27,017.
Q: How much is the VCC deposit?
VCC states the non-refundable portion is CAD 10,000 for any programme and that it is non-transferable. Once an offer is issued, no changes to programme or intake are permitted. Confirm the exact terms on your own Letter of Offer.
Q: Does VCC Broadway have PGWP eligible programmes?
The Bachelor of Applied Music is exempt from the field of study test. The other 15 credential programmes are subject to it. The 2 ESL pathways carry no work permit at all. Confirm your programme in writing before paying the deposit.
Q: What percentage do I need for VCC Broadway?
Fifty percent on 17 of the 18 programmes. Only the Bachelor of Applied Music asks 70 percent. Two culinary programmes accept Grade 10 rather than Class 12.
Q: Does VCC Broadway accept Duolingo?
Yes on most programmes, at 95 to 120. The Health Care Assistant diploma refuses it entirely, and the two ESL pathways require no English test at all.
Q: Do the VCC trades diplomas make me a certified tradesperson?
No. Automotive refinishing and heavy duty mechanics are certified trades in British Columbia, and journeyperson certification requires apprenticeship hours and examination beyond the diploma. Ask how much credit the programme carries toward that.
Q: When can I start at VCC Broadway?
September runs on all 18 programmes and January on 13. Across the campus there are 112 entry windows spanning ten months. Seat capacity is the real constraint, so apply eight to twelve months ahead.
Q: Does Apply Study Visa charge for VCC applications?
No. Counselling, application review and submission are free, including the transfer credit check with the receiving university and the work permit assessment. We are paid by the institutions we work with, which is exactly why we will tell you plainly when a programme carries a risk.
✅ Confirm before you pay. Because the deposit includes a CAD 10,000 non-refundable portion, confirm in writing first: that your programme and intake are running, that the work permit position is understood, and for transfer routes that the receiving university has confirmed the credits. If your programme leads to a regulated occupation or a certified trade, confirm the British Columbia pathway separately. Details cover all 18 Broadway programmes and were checked in September 2026. Tuition, deposits and the proof of funds threshold are revised regularly.
