Program overview

The Dual Program in Video Game Design and Animation with the Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCA) pairs an 18-month, art-focused diploma at Toronto Film School with a two-year bachelor's completion at Yorkville University's Toronto campus, producing graduates who hold both a specialist creative credential and a full degree.

The diploma phase concentrates on the visual side of games: concept art and character design, 2D and 3D asset creation, modelling and texturing, rigging, character and environment animation, and integrating art into live game engines. Students build a professional demo reel through repeated studio-style projects, learning the pipelines, naming conventions and iteration discipline that real art teams expect on day one.

The BCA phase adds the wider creative-industries toolkit — narrative and storytelling, creative business and entrepreneurship, intellectual-property basics and audience analysis — so graduates can operate as freelancers, in-house artists or future art leads rather than purely as technicians.

Toronto's game, animation and VFX ecosystem is among the largest in North America, and demo-reel-ready artists move between game studios, animation houses and post-production facilities throughout their careers. Because the pathway concludes with a bachelor's degree, graduates are exempt from the post-2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction and may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years (final decision by IRCC).

Career opportunities

With a demo reel, shipped projects and a degree, graduates pursue art-side roles across games and adjacent screen industries:

  • Game Artist — producing 2D/3D assets to studio pipelines
  • Character / Environment Artist — modelling, texturing and dressing game worlds
  • Game Animator — bringing characters, creatures and effects to life
  • Concept Artist — visual development for games and screen projects
  • 3D Generalist — flexible production roles across games, animation and VFX
  • Freelance / Contract Artist — supported by the BCA's business training

The same reel opens doors in Toronto's animation and visual-effects studios, giving graduates two large hiring markets instead of one.
