Program overview

The Dual Program in Video Game Design and Development with the Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCA) combines an intensive 18-month diploma at Toronto Film School with a two-year degree-completion at Yorkville University's Toronto campus — two credentials, one continuous pathway, finishing with a full bachelor's degree.

The diploma phase is production-driven: students learn game design theory, level design, gameplay programming, engine work in industry-standard tools such as Unity and Unreal, prototyping, playtesting and iteration, and ship multiple playable game projects for their portfolio. Working in cross-disciplinary teams mirrors how real studios operate, so graduates arrive at their first job already used to sprints, builds and deadlines.

The BCA phase then broadens that technical craft into a creative-industries education — storytelling, creative entrepreneurship, media law and business, audience and market analysis — giving developers the professional literacy to freelance, lead teams or launch their own studio.

Toronto sits at the heart of one of the world's most active game-development clusters, home to hundreds of studios from indie teams to major publishers, and the surrounding screen and interactive-media industry constantly hires portfolio-ready talent. Because the pathway ends in a bachelor's degree, graduates are exempt from the post-2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction and may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years (final decision by IRCC).
