Program overview
The Dual Program in Writing for Film and TV with the Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCA) pairs Toronto Film School's 18-month screenwriting diploma with a two-year bachelor's completion at Yorkville University's Toronto campus, producing writers who graduate with both a portfolio of scripts and a full degree.
The diploma phase is writing-intensive from week one: story structure and character, feature and television formats, series development and the writers'-room process, dialogue, adaptation, and rewriting to professional notes. Students workshop constantly, pitch their projects aloud, and see their pages performed and filmed by acting and production students — a feedback loop most writing programs cannot offer. Graduates finish with polished feature and pilot scripts plus a series bible ready for competitions, agents and producers.
The BCA phase adds the professional layer around the craft: the business of screen content, rights and contracts, creative entrepreneurship, and audience and market analysis — equipping writers to navigate development, negotiate their work and generate income across formats while building a screen career.
Toronto's booming production sector, along with Canada's broadcasters, streamers and funded development programs, creates ongoing demand for trained story talent. Because the pathway concludes with a bachelor's degree, graduates are exempt from the post-2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction and may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years (final decision by IRCC).
