Program overview
BA (Hons) Contour Fashion is DMU’s internationally distinctive specialism: the design and technical development of lingerie, swimwear, shapewear and performance bodywear, taught across three years through anatomy-aware pattern cutting, stretch-fabric behaviour, precision construction and the fit science that governs garments worn next to the skin.
The course is widely recognised as the leading provision of its kind in Britain, with a long history of supplying designers to global underwear and swimwear brands, and industry involvement is unusually direct — sponsored projects, brand-set briefs, competitions and recruitment contact form part of the ordinary teaching year rather than an extracurricular add-on.
For agents, the single most useful fact about this course is its rarity: very few institutions worldwide teach contour at degree level, which is precisely why global brands recruit from it directly and why its graduates report unusually short job searches. Applicants need a portfolio showing technical curiosity alongside design ideas, and should expect precision work — millimetre tolerances, complex elastication, repeated fitting cycles — rather than expressive studio freedom. The recorded January windows across cycles ease admission timing, at the fashion school’s standard £16,800 annual fee.
Technical rigour defines the studio experience: cup construction, elastication, grading across body variation and the tolerance-tight sampling that this category demands, all practised on industrial machinery specific to contour manufacture, culminating in a final collection judged by an industry that knows exactly how hard these garments are to make.
The employment picture is exceptional for a creative course — specialist demand, direct brand recruitment and entry roles at £22,000–£26,000 — and the skills transfer into the substantial contour manufacturing bases of South and East Asia. The honours degree carries Graduate Route eligibility at the 18-month post-January-2027 term, with dependants excluded on taught routes.

Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) with a minimum of 70% per the portal export — note the ASV source states 65% in Standard 12 best four subjects (excluding Hindi); verify the operative bar with DMU admissions.
- English (meet any one, per source): IELTS 6 overall with no band below 5.5; PTE Academic 59 overall (no component below 59); TOEFL 60 overall as recorded in source (legacy component format); Duolingo English Test 105.
- English waiver: English test waiver may be available on Medium of Instruction plus Standard 12 English at 65% or above (2015 or later, all boards) except boards of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh — assessed case by case per the ASV source.
- Application: No application fee. Deposit amount not stated in source — confirm with DMU International before CAS stage.

Career opportunities
Typical first destinations for graduates:
- Lingerie & Contour Designer — the course’s specialist destination
- Swimwear Designer — performance and fashion swim ranges
- Garment Technologist (Contour) — fit and specification specialists
- Product Developer — brand and supplier development teams
- Technical Designer — grading and construction roles
- Performance Apparel Designer — sports and shapewear categories
Reality check: this is the rare creative degree with more industry demand than graduates — contour employers recruit directly from the course — but the technical bar is unforgiving, since fit failures in this category are immediately visible on the body.
