Program overview

BA (Hons) Creative Writing and Film Studies joins writing workshops to the critical study of cinema, letting students develop screenwriting and prose craft alongside genuine understanding of film form, history and industry.

Screen storytelling is taught structurally — how sequences build, how scripts are formatted and pitched, why development executives reject what they reject — and film studies supplies the analytical depth that distinguishes writers who understand the medium from those who merely watch it.

Assessment mixes creative submissions with critical essays and a final project that many students shape as a substantial script with accompanying analysis, at five recorded entry windows across September and January cycles.

Students should understand how screenwriting careers actually begin, because the romantic version misleads: almost nobody sells a first script cold, and the working route runs through script reading, development assistance and assistant roles inside production companies, where writers learn what gets commissioned and why while being paid. This degree prepares that path well, combining the craft training to write and the analytical training to assess. Students should write complete scripts rather than fragments during the course, since finished work is the only kind that can be entered into competitions or shown to agents, and both are realistic routes from here. Screenwriting competitions with recognised industry judges are the most accessible visibility route for new writers and should be entered annually rather than once at graduation.

Paid entry lands in script reading, development support and content writing at £19,000–£24,000. The honours award carries Graduate Route eligibility for 18 months under the post-January-2027 settlement, and taught-route students cannot bring dependants.
