Program overview
This joint route combines creative writing workshops with professional journalism training: craft, voice and narrative technique alongside news writing, media law, ethics and multimedia production.
The combination is well suited to contemporary publishing, where the boundary between reporting and storytelling has blurred and where long-form, narrative non-fiction and branded content all reward writers who can do both accurately and engagingly.
Students build a dual portfolio — published journalism and creative work — and the journalism modules supply the legal literacy and deadline habits that freelance writing careers depend on. Five admission windows appear in the source, split between September starts and January starts.
The commercial logic of this pairing is stronger than either subject alone: digital publishing wants writers who can report accurately and hold a reader’s attention, branded content pays well for exactly that combination, and long-form journalism has expanded as platforms compete on quality rather than volume. Students should therefore build a portfolio spanning both registers — hard news filed to deadline alongside features with genuine voice — because it demonstrates range that single-discipline graduates cannot match. Media law grounding from the journalism strand also makes these graduates safer hires for communications teams, which typically pay above newsroom rates at entry. Students should also register with the relevant professional bodies as student members, since their training resources and job boards are considerably better than general graduate sites.
Entry pay runs £19,000–£24,000 with communications roles above that, and freelance commissions typically supplement salaried work. Graduates qualify for the Graduate Route at the 18-month post-2026 length, with dependants excluded across taught study.

Career opportunities
Typical first destinations for graduates:
- Feature Writer — magazines and long-form platforms
- Content Journalist — digital newsrooms
- Copywriter — agencies and brand teams
- Editorial Assistant — publishing and media
- Communications Executive — the higher-paying adjacent market
- Freelance Writer — commissions across outlets
Reality check: this pairing produces writers who can both report accurately and write engagingly, which is exactly what digital publishing wants — but it hires on clips, so continuous publishing from year one is not optional.
