Program overview

BA (Hons) Game Art trains the visual production side of games: 3D modelling and sculpting, texturing and materials, environment and character creation, lighting, and the real-time engine workflows through which all of it must actually run, developed across three years toward a portfolio of engine-ready work.

Technical constraint is treated as the discipline’s creative frame — polygon budgets, UV efficiency, shader behaviour and level-of-detail pipelines — because a game artist’s work is only as good as its performance in engine, and studios screen precisely on that literacy.

The January entry windows recorded across all cycles are genuinely unusual for a studio-based art course and worth surfacing to applicants whose portfolios or results arrive late in the year. Applicants should also understand the portfolio expectation: evidence of drawing and observational skill matters as much as existing 3D work, because studios can teach software but not visual judgement. The £17,300 fee matches the technology faculty standard, and students should budget for a capable personal computer, which becomes the primary working tool from the first term onward.

DMU’s games provision runs its art and programming courses in proximity, letting art students collaborate with games programming and production cohorts on playable projects, and the school’s showcase presence puts final-year work in front of studio scouts; January windows recorded across all cycles add unusual admission flexibility for a studio subject.

Junior game art roles pay £22,000–£27,000, with the same skills transferring to architectural visualisation, simulation and virtual production when studio hiring cools. As a completed honours degree the course carries Graduate Route eligibility at the post-2027 18-month length, with dependants excluded on taught undergraduate routes.

Career opportunities

Typical first destinations for graduates:

  • Junior Environment Artist — building game worlds
  • Character Artist — modelling and texturing roles
  • 3D Asset Artist — production pipeline positions
  • Technical Artist — the bridge between art and engine
  • Level Artist — dressing and lighting playable spaces
  • Visualisation Artist — architecture and simulation industries

Reality check: game art portfolios are judged on production-ready assets — correct topology, sensible texel density, engine-tested materials — so students should present work inside a real-time engine rather than as pretty renders that hide technical shortcuts.
