Program overview
BA (Hons) Graphic Design covers visual communication from typography and image-making through brand identity, editorial and publication design, packaging, digital interfaces and motion, taught across three years through studio briefs that mirror the range of work a design studio actually receives.
Typography is treated as the discipline’s spine and drilled accordingly, because it is the skill that separates trained designers from software users; alongside it students develop research and concept methods, learning to defend design decisions in critique sessions that rehearse the client conversations ahead of them.
Software fluency deserves explicit mention because job adverts screen on it: the industry standard creative suite plus growing expectations around motion and prototyping tools, all taught through project work here rather than as isolated skills modules. Students who additionally learn basic web and motion during the degree enter a materially better job market than print-only graduates. September entries run across the three recorded cycles at the £17,300 design fee, and printing costs for portfolio and degree-show work should be budgeted in the final year.
Live and competition briefs run through the middle year, and the final year is portfolio-driven: self-directed projects chosen to demonstrate range and depth, prepared for the industry showcase and degree show where studios and agencies scout emerging designers.
Junior design roles pay £21,000–£26,000 with London higher and freelance common alongside employment; motion and digital skills materially raise starting positions. As a completed honours degree the course qualifies for the Graduate Route’s 18-month allowance under the rules applying from January 2027, and dependants cannot accompany students on taught routes.
