Program overview

BA (Hons) Media and Communication studies how messages are produced, circulated and received: communication theory, media industries and institutions, public relations and strategic communication, digital and social media, audience analysis, and practical content production across formats.

The degree’s breadth is both its strength and its risk — it opens communications, PR, content, social and marketing routes simultaneously, but rewards students who narrow deliberately through option choices, projects and work experience rather than drifting through it generically.

Agents should coach applicants to narrow this degree deliberately from the first term — choosing a strand, building a portfolio, securing internships — because its breadth is only an advantage to students who impose direction on it, and only a liability to those who do not. Practical output matters more than module marks in communications hiring. The £16,800 arts-faculty fee applies across the three recorded September cycles, and student media, society committee roles and freelance content work all count as usable evidence when applications are assessed by communications employers, who read portfolios before transcripts almost without exception.

Practical modules produce real communication artefacts — campaigns, press materials, content series, strategy documents — and DMU’s media facilities support production work, while critical modules supply the analytical framing that distinguishes strategists from executors.

Graduates enter communications, social media and PR roles at £20,000–£25,000 across virtually every sector, since all organisations communicate. On completing the honours award graduates hold Graduate Route permission of 18 months under the settlement applying to post-2026 applications, with dependants not admitted alongside taught undergraduate study.

Who can apply (guide for international students):

  • English waiver: English test waiver may be available on Medium of Instruction plus Standard 12 English at 65% or above (2015 or later, all boards) except boards of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh — assessed case by case per the ASV source.

Career opportunities

Typical first destinations for graduates:

  • Communications Officer — corporate, public and third sector
  • Social Media Manager — brand and organisational accounts
  • PR Assistant — agency and in-house press work
  • Content Producer — editorial and marketing teams
  • Internal Communications Assistant — large employers
  • Digital Marketing Executive — the adjacent commercial market

Reality check: media and communication is a broad degree in a broad market, which means differentiation must come from the student — a specialism, a portfolio, an internship, a platform — because the degree title alone signals very little to employers.
