Bachelor of Science - Music Production (Honours)

BSc (Hons) Music Production trains the making of recorded music and audio: recording technique and microphone practice, mixing and mastering, digital audio workstations and signal processing, arrangement and production aesthetics, and the acoustics and electronics that underpin all of it.

Studio time is the course’s substance — recording spaces, control rooms and production suites where students track real musicians and mix on professional monitoring — because production judgement is trained by hearing decisions on proper systems, not by reading about them.

A budgeting note families find useful: the university provides the expensive infrastructure — live rooms, control rooms, monitoring, outboard equipment — while students typically acquire headphones, an interface and a licence for their preferred workstation over time, costs that are modest relative to the £17,300 fee. Students should also start recording other people early, since the ability to make artists comfortable in a session is learned only by doing it and never appears on a syllabus. September entries run across the three recorded admission cycles, and campus studio time is bookable throughout the course.

The syllabus deliberately spans beyond music into audio post, game audio and immersive formats, reflecting where audio employment has actually migrated, and the final year builds a portfolio of produced work targeted at the student’s chosen strand.

Salaried audio roles pay £20,000–£26,000 in post-production and game audio, with music production itself typically freelance and project-based; the technical foundation is what makes either viable. The completed honours degree qualifies for the Graduate Route at the 18-month post-January-2027 term, with dependants excluded on taught undergraduate study.
