📍 This overview describes University of Sunderland and applies to all its campuses. You're on the University of Sunderland - London page — its programs, fees and location below are specific to this campus.

The University of Sunderland is a public university in the north east of England, and one of the more heavily recruited UK destinations for Indian students. It traces its origins to 1901, when it opened as Sunderland Technical College, and it received full university status in 1992. Both dates matter, because most pages you will read give you only the second one and then describe a “34 year old institution”, which is misleading about a place with more than a century of teaching behind it.

It teaches around 200 courses across five faculties, with campuses in Sunderland itself, in London and in Hong Kong. The Sunderland campus alone currently lists 140 programmes open to international applicants, from a five week English course at GBP 990 to a four year Master of Pharmacy at GBP 20,000 a year.

What makes it worth a serious look from Punjab is the combination of a genuine public university degree, a cost of living far below London, and an automatic scholarship that requires no application at all. What makes it worth reading this page carefully is that the scholarship figure changed for 2026/27 entry, and almost every listing site is still quoting the old one.

🎓 Quick Fact: The Global Leaders Scholarship for 2026/27 entry is worth GBP 6,000 off undergraduate tuition and GBP 5,500 off postgraduate tuition. It is applied automatically by the admissions team, appears on your conditional offer letter, and needs no separate form. Indian applicants are eligible. See Section 7 for the exact terms and the older figure still circulating.

2. Rankings & Reputation: Reading Them Honestly

Sunderland is a case where different ranking tables tell such different stories that quoting only one is effectively dishonest. Here is the full picture.

Ranking System Position What It Measures
The Guardian University Guide 2026 #27 in the UK Teaching quality, student satisfaction, value added, career outcomes
Complete University Guide 2026 #83 in the UK Entry standards, research quality, graduate prospects
Times Higher Education World 2026 #1501 band globally Heavily weighted toward research output and citations
QS Stars rating 5 stars for teaching, employability, inclusiveness and facilities An audited rating, not a league table position
⚠️ How to read this gap. #27 in the Guardian and #1501 in Times Higher Education are not contradictory. The Guardian measures how well undergraduates are taught and what happens to them afterwards. THE measures research citations, where Sunderland is a small player. If you are coming to be taught, the Guardian number is the relevant one. If you want a research led institution for doctoral work, it is not. Agents who show you only one of these numbers are choosing which story to tell you.

The QS 5 star rating is also not a rank. It is an audit that any university can pay to undergo, and a good result means the university met defined standards, not that it beat other universities. It is a legitimate signal about teaching and facilities. It is not evidence of a top 100 position, and pages implying otherwise are misreading it.

3. What Other Pages Get Wrong About Sunderland

We compared the pages currently ranking for this search against the university’s own published information and our own programme by programme data covering all 140 international courses. These are the errors we found in circulation.

Claim you will see The actual position
“International undergraduate fees are GBP 12,000 to 15,000” Undergraduate degrees at the Sunderland campus run GBP 14,000 to 17,500, and MPharm is GBP 20,000. No degree is priced at GBP 12,000
“Acceptance rate around 75 percent” The university does not publish an acceptance rate. Admission is assessed against published entry criteria, course by course
“Founded in 1992” or “a 34 year old institution” Founded 1901 as Sunderland Technical College. 1992 is when it became a university
“Scholarships up to GBP 6,000, limited and highly competitive” The Global Leaders Scholarship is automatic, with no separate application and no competition. It is subject to availability and regional eligibility, which is a different thing
“Scholarship is GBP 5,000 undergraduate and GBP 4,500 postgraduate” Those are the 2025/26 figures. For 2026/27 entry the values are GBP 6,000 and GBP 5,500
“Graduate Route gives 2 years” For applications made from 1 January 2027 the grant is 18 months. All 2027 and 2028 intakes fall after that date

4. Courses: What Sunderland Actually Offers International Students

The Sunderland campus currently lists 140 programmes open to international applicants. Rather than reprint all of them, here is the shape of the catalogue and the routes that matter most to Indian students.

Type of programme Count Typical fee a year

The Routes Indian Students Ask About Most

💼

MBA and specialist MBAs

A general MBA at GBP 17,000 with ten entry windows a cycle, plus specialisms in Finance, HR, Marketing, Sports Management and Sustainability at GBP 17,000 to 18,000.

💻

Computing and data

MSc Cybersecurity, Data Science and Computing at GBP 15,000, with two year placement versions of Applied Computing, Applied Cybersecurity and Applied Data Science.

💊

Pharmacy routes

MPharm from Class 12, and the OSPAP diploma for pharmacists who already qualified in India. Both covered in detail in Section 9.

🩺

Nursing and health

BSc Adult Nursing Practice, a nursing top-up for existing nurses, MSc Nursing and MSc Public Health. Registration conditions apply throughout.

🎓

Top-up degrees

Eighteen routes converting a diploma into a full UK honours degree in six months to a year, from GBP 14,000. The cheapest path to a UK degree here.

🔬

MPhil research degree

GBP 13,500, and the only route here that can allow a spouse and children to come with you. Section 10 explains the condition attached.

5. Tuition Fees and the Real Cost of a Year

Unlike some UK institutions, Sunderland does not charge one flat international fee. It varies by course, and the spread is wide.

Example programme Fee a year Length
MBA Top-Up GBP 9,000 7 months
MA Social Work GBP 10,000 2 years
MPhil (research) GBP 13,500 1 year
Top-up degrees, most subjects GBP 14,000 to 16,000 6 months to 1 year
MSc Cybersecurity, Data Science, Computing GBP 15,000 1 year
Most three year bachelor degrees GBP 16,000 to 17,500 3 years
MBA and specialist MBAs GBP 17,000 to 19,000 1 to 2 years
MPharm GBP 20,000 4 years

Worked First Year Cost for a One Year Master

Item Amount (GBP) Notes
Tuition, MSc at GBP 16,000 16,000 Varies by course
Less Global Leaders Scholarship minus 5,500 Automatic for eligible postgraduates, 2026/27
Net tuition 10,500 This is the number that matters
Living costs, visa requirement outside London approx 10,224 Home Office rate, 9 months maximum
Student visa application approx 524 Set by UK government
Immigration Health Surcharge approx 776 a year Charged for course length plus buffer
Flights and setup approx 1,000 One off
Realistic first year outlay approx 23,000 Roughly INR 25 to 27 lakh
⚠️ The living cost difference is the real story. The Home Office maintenance requirement is roughly GBP 1,136 a month outside London against GBP 1,483 inside it. Over nine months that is more than GBP 3,100 less that you must show and, more importantly, genuinely spend. Combined with the scholarship, a Sunderland master can land close to GBP 10,000 below the equivalent London course.

The Deposit

Most students from outside the EU must pay a non refundable tuition deposit of GBP 3,500 before the university will issue the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. This is the single biggest financial commitment before your visa decision, so make sure your funds and documents are in order first. Note that the London campus operates a different rule, requiring 50 percent of tuition, which is one of several reasons the two campuses should never be treated as interchangeable.

6. Admission Requirements for Indian Students

Sunderland states that it recognises internationally accredited qualifications and assesses them against UK comparability guidance, considering each application on its own merits including work experience and maturity. In practice that produces the following positions.

Level Requirement
Undergraduate Class 12 with the percentage set for the course, most commonly 60 percent. Some courses ask 50, competitive ones ask 70, MPharm asks 75
Postgraduate A three year Indian bachelor degree is accepted, typically at 55 to 60 percent. Some courses set higher
Top-up degrees A recognised diploma or HND carrying the credits required for direct entry to the final year, in a related subject
MBA Top-Up An existing postgraduate certificate or diploma in a related management subject

💡 Apply Study Visa insight: the postgraduate line above matters more than anything else on this page for most of our applicants. A three year BA, BCom, BSc or BBA is accepted for master entry here. Some agent feeds and listing pages still record a four year requirement, which would wrongly disqualify the majority of Indian graduates. If someone tells you your three year degree is not enough for Sunderland, ask them to show you the university’s own entry guidance.

English Language Requirements

Requirement Applies to
IELTS 6.0, no band below 5.5, or PTE 59 127 of the 140 courses. This is the standard
IELTS 6.5, writing 6.0 MA Journalism, MA Public Relations
IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0 or 6.5 MPhil, MSc Inequality and Society, MSc Leadership in Criminal Justice, MA Radio, MSc Nursing
IELTS 7.0, no band below 6.5 BSc Adult Nursing Practice, MPharm
IELTS 7.0 in every band BA Social Work, MA Social Work, OSPAP diploma (which is also the only course requiring PTE 63 rather than 59)
TOEFL and Duolingo Not accepted on any of the 140 courses
⚠️ Do not book TOEFL or Duolingo for Sunderland. Neither is accepted on any international course at this campus. Two courses go further and take IELTS only, with no PTE alternative: BSc Adult Nursing Practice and the five week pre-sessional English course. Book the right test the first time; the wrong one costs a month and a fee.

7. The Global Leaders Scholarship, Explained Properly

This is Sunderland’s strongest commercial feature and the section most often reported inaccurately.

Level 2026/27 value 2025/26 value (still quoted elsewhere)
Undergraduate GBP 6,000 a year GBP 5,000
Postgraduate GBP 5,500 GBP 4,500
MPharm GBP 5,000 Not separately listed

How It Actually Works

  • No application form. The admissions team allocates it. You will see it on your conditional offer letter as a reduction in the tuition fee section.
  • Not competitive in the usual sense. Eligible applicants receive it. It is subject to availability and to regional eligibility, which is not the same as being judged against other candidates.
  • India is eligible. The scheme excludes some regions including East Asia, Gulf states and Europe. India is not among the exclusions.
  • Applies to both campuses, Sunderland and London, for 2026/27 entry.
  • Preparation courses are excluded. Foundation, EAP and pre-master courses do not qualify. That includes the GBP 990 pre-sessional English course.
  • Deposit deadlines apply. For semester one the tuition deposit must be paid by 30 June for September starts or 31 July for October starts.

The Other Award Worth Knowing

Sunderland runs an Alumni Loyalty Scheme giving a 20 percent fee waiver to its own graduates returning for a postgraduate degree, covering MA, MSc, LLM, MBA, MPhil and doctoral routes. If you complete a bachelor degree here and return for a master, that is a substantial second saving.

⚠️ One detail to confirm. The university describes the undergraduate award as GBP 6,000 a year but also states a total of GBP 15,000 across three years, which does not equal three times GBP 6,000. That implies the value tapers in later years. Ask admissions to state the amount for each year of your course in writing, not just year one.

8. How to Apply: Step by Step

1

Choose the course and the campus

Decide between Sunderland and London deliberately. They have different fees, a different deposit rule and different course lists. Everything on this page refers to the Sunderland campus.

2

Check the exact entry bar for that course

Percentages range from 50 to 75 across the catalogue and English requirements range from IELTS 6.0 to 7.0 in every band. Do not assume the standard applies to your course.

3

Book the right English test

IELTS Academic or PTE Academic only. TOEFL and Duolingo are not accepted anywhere here, and two courses take IELTS alone.

4

Apply directly, with no fee

Postgraduate applications go direct to the university or through your agent. Undergraduate applications may go through UCAS. There is no application fee, so applying early costs nothing.

5

Read the offer letter, especially the fee section

The Global Leaders Scholarship appears here as a reduction. Check the value, check whether it applies to later years too, and check the deposit amount. If a discount is not printed on the offer, it does not exist.

6

Pay the GBP 3,500 deposit and hold your funds

The deposit is non refundable and the CAS will not be issued without it. Hold your maintenance funds for a consecutive 28 day period ending no more than 31 days before you apply, and book the tuberculosis test.

7

Receive the CAS and apply for the student visa

You can submit up to six months before your course start date. Check the course end date on the CAS, because it determines how long your visa runs and therefore your post study work window.

8

Arrange accommodation and enrol

Sunderland accommodation is markedly cheaper than London or the southern cities, which is a large part of this university’s financial case.

9. Regulated Courses: Read This Before You Apply

Several Sunderland courses lead toward professions that the UK regulates. A degree is necessary but not sufficient for all of them, and for one of them most international graduates are ineligible regardless of results. We would rather say this now than after a deposit is paid.

Course What you must understand
MPharm Four years at GBP 20,000, so GBP 80,000 of tuition. The degree alone does not make you a pharmacist: a supervised foundation training year and a registration assessment follow before General Pharmaceutical Council registration
OSPAP diploma The conversion route for pharmacists who already qualified in India. It is one stage of registration, not the whole of it. It is also a diploma, not a degree, so it carries no Graduate Route rights
BSc Adult Nursing Practice Leads toward NMC registration, but clinical placement capacity for international students is limited and never guaranteed. Confirm placement eligibility in writing before accepting
Nursing Top-Up and MSc Nursing Both are for people who are already nurses. Neither is an entry route into nursing and neither confers NMC registration
BA and MA Social Work IELTS 7.0 in every band, assessed practice placements, and Social Work England registration required to practise. Placement availability for international students is not guaranteed
BSc Professional Policing and Policing Studies Top-Up UK police forces require nationality or settled residency plus a residency check before appointment. Most international graduates cannot join a force with these degrees. Treat them as academic qualifications
BSc Clinical Psychology and Psychology routes The word clinical misleads. Practising requires an accredited doctorate and HCPC registration, typically six or more years further
Education courses Only one route confers Qualified Teacher Status: BSc Mathematics Education 11 to 16 with QTS. Education Studies, MA Education and the early years master do not

10. Student Visa, Graduate Route and Dependants

Sunderland is a licensed student sponsor and issues its own Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. The visa position is straightforward for most courses and has two important exceptions.

Graduate Route: 18 Months, and Seven Courses That Do Not Qualify

Completing a degree here supports a Graduate Route application. For applications made from 1 January 2027 the grant is 18 months, unsponsored, with no restriction on the type of work and no minimum salary. Every 2027 and 2028 intake falls after that date, so 18 months is the figure to plan around, not the two years that older guides quote.

⚠️ Seven of the 140 courses carry no post study work rights at all. The Graduate Route requires completion of a course at bachelor degree level or above. These do not qualify: the three postgraduate certificates (Management Studies, Human Resource Management, Digital Marketing and Analytics), the three postgraduate diplomas (Management Studies, Human Resource Management, and the OSPAP pharmacy diploma), and the five week pre-sessional English course. If your plan includes working in the UK afterwards, take a full degree instead.

Two further conditions decide whether you actually get it. Your student visa must still be valid when you submit, which matters most on the short courses: three top-up degrees here run only six months, and the MBA Top-Up runs seven. A resit or a delayed award on those can destroy eligibility. And you must have studied in the UK for the required period, meaning the whole course for anything of 12 months or less.

Dependants: No, With Exactly One Exception

Since 1 January 2024 students on taught courses cannot bring a partner or children. That covers 139 of the 140 programmes at this campus.

The exception is the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), at GBP 13,500. UK rules permit dependants for students on a research based higher degree of nine months or longer, and an MPhil is a research degree rather than a taught one.

🛂 Critical caveat on the MPhil. Not every MPhil in the UK is research based; some are taught, and the Home Office will not accept your own assessment of which yours is. The university must confirm the research basis on your CAS. Never plan a family move around this without that confirmation in writing. The MPhil also asks 70 percent and IELTS 6.5, and it requires a supervisor willing to take your project, so it is not a fallback for a weak application. Talk to us before you build a plan around it.

11. Who Sunderland Suits, and Who It Does Not

It suits you if

  • You want a public UK university degree rather than a private college award, at a total cost well below London.
  • You hold a three year Indian bachelor degree and want a master without an extra qualifying year.
  • You hold a diploma or HND and want a full honours degree in six months to a year.
  • You value a guaranteed automatic fee reduction over the possibility of a competitive scholarship you may not win.
  • You are a pharmacist already qualified in India and need the OSPAP conversion route, which few UK universities run.
  • You want placement based master routes, which Sunderland offers in computing, cybersecurity, data science, project management and marketing.

It does not suit you if

  • You need a globally ranked research university. The Guardian position is strong, the THE position is not, and for doctoral ambitions that matters.
  • You are bringing a spouse and are not doing the MPhil with written CAS confirmation.
  • You want to join a UK police force. The policing degrees will not open that door for most international students.
  • You are relying on part time earnings to fund tuition. Term time hours are capped at 20 a week.
  • You want a short, cheap postgraduate credential plus a work visa. The certificates and diplomas are cheap for a reason: no Graduate Route.
  • Your family expects a city like London or Manchester. Sunderland is a smaller north east city, which is exactly why it is affordable.

12. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is a three year Indian bachelor degree accepted for a master at Sunderland?

Yes. Sunderland recognises internationally accredited qualifications assessed against UK comparability guidance, under which a three year bachelor degree from a recognised Indian university is comparable to a UK bachelor degree. Typical entry is 55 to 60 percent, though individual courses may set higher requirements.

Q: How much is the University of Sunderland scholarship for 2026?

The Global Leaders Scholarship gives GBP 6,000 off undergraduate tuition, GBP 5,500 off postgraduate tuition and GBP 5,000 off MPharm tuition for 2026/27 entry. It is automatic, requires no application, and appears on your conditional offer letter. Foundation, EAP and pre-master courses are excluded.

Q: What is the acceptance rate at the University of Sunderland?

The university does not publish one. Figures such as 75 percent that circulate online are estimates by third party sites, not official data. Admission is assessed against the published entry requirements for each individual course.

Q: What is the University of Sunderland ranking?

It depends entirely on the table. The Guardian University Guide 2026 places it 27th in the UK, the Complete University Guide places it 83rd, and Times Higher Education places it in the 1501 world band. The Guardian weights teaching and student outcomes; THE weights research citations.

Q: Does Sunderland accept Duolingo or TOEFL?

No. Neither is accepted on any of the 140 international courses at the Sunderland campus. Use IELTS Academic or PTE Academic. Two courses, BSc Adult Nursing Practice and the five week pre-sessional English course, accept IELTS only with no PTE alternative.

Q: How much is the deposit at the University of Sunderland?

A non refundable tuition deposit of GBP 3,500 is required before the CAS is issued for most students from outside the EU at the Sunderland campus. The London campus operates a different rule requiring 50 percent of tuition.

Q: Can I bring my wife or husband to the UK on a Sunderland course?

Only on the MPhil, and only if the university confirms on your CAS that it is a research based higher degree. Since 1 January 2024 taught course students cannot bring dependants, which covers 139 of the 140 programmes at this campus.

Q: How long is the post study work visa after Sunderland?

18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027, which covers all 2027 and 2028 intakes. Seven courses carry no post study work rights at all: three postgraduate certificates, three postgraduate diplomas and the pre-sessional English course.

Q: Is the Sunderland campus the same as the London campus?

No. They share a university and a degree awarding body but have different course lists, different fees and different deposit rules. Sunderland asks a GBP 3,500 deposit; London asks 50 percent of tuition. Everything on this page refers to the Sunderland campus.

Q: How do I apply to the University of Sunderland through Apply Study Visa?

Send us your Class 12 marksheet or degree transcripts and your IELTS or PTE score if you have one. We check your profile against the published entry requirements for the specific course, confirm the scholarship value and deposit in writing before you pay anything, and manage the application, the CAS and the UK student visa as one process from our Ludhiana office.

Q: Does Apply Study Visa charge students a fee for this service?

No. Our counselling, application handling and visa filing for this university are free to the student. We are paid by the institutions we work with, which is exactly why we will tell you plainly when a course does not suit your case rather than pushing the application through.

Verify before you commit. Four items here move and should be reconfirmed in writing at application stage rather than taken from any page, including this one: the scholarship value for every year of your course, the deposit amount for your specific intake, placement availability if you are applying for nursing or social work, and the UK visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, both set by the UK government. Programme level details on this page were compiled from the university’s current international course data covering all 140 Sunderland campus programmes, checked in August 2026.
