Sudbury sits on one of the richest mining districts on earth, so it surprises many Indian applicants to learn that Cambrian College’s own mining diplomas do not lead to a post-graduation work permit. That single detail sums up how carefully a Cambrian offer needs to be read in 2026.

The good news is substantial. Of the 57 Cambrian programmes in this guide that are open to international students, 42 are PGWP eligible, among them the engineering technology diplomas, skilled trades, health programmes, computing and every graduate certificate. Fees cluster around CAD 19,228 for the first year, and Sudbury rents are far below those of Toronto.

The caution is equally real. 15 open programmes carry no PGWP, including mining, power engineering, chemical engineering, animation, police foundations and business finance. And Cambrian has closed or suspended many programmes that agent lists still advertise, from its business diplomas to project management, after its international enrolment almost halved.

1. Cambrian College at a Glance

Cambrian opened in 1967 with campuses in Sudbury, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie; the latter two became Canadore College and Sault College in the early 1970s. Today it is the main college for Greater Sudbury, a city of about 170,000 that serves as the commercial and health care hub for Northeastern Ontario.

2. Which Cambrian Programmes Lead to a PGWP

Since November 2024, college diplomas, certificates and graduate certificates qualify for a PGWP only when their field of study, identified by a CIP code, is on IRCC’s eligible list. Degrees are exempt. Cambrian publishes its eligible programmes with their CIP codes on a list last updated on 7 January 2026, and each programme page repeats the verdict in a line reading PGWP Eligible: Yes or No.

Length then decides how long the permit lasts. A programme of two years or more can support up to three years of work; a shorter one supports roughly its own length.

3. The 15 Open Programmes With No Work Permit

These programmes accept international students, show an international cost, and state on their own Cambrian page that they are not PGWP eligible. If a work permit matters to you, treat an offer for any of them with great care.

4. Programmes Cambrian Has Closed or Suspended

Cambrian’s international enrolment fell from 2,631 to 1,430 students after the federal study permit cap and the PGWP field of study rule, and the college projected its first deficit in about a decade, CAD 1.4 million for 2025/26. It responded in two rounds.

In April 2025 it suspended intake to ten programmes, among them Global Business Management, Human Resources Management, Hospitality, Mobile Application Development, Project Management, Public Relations and Tourism. In November 2025 six more followed, including Business Analytics, Marketing Management, Supply Chain Management, Fitness and Health Promotion and Community and Justice Services. President Kristine Morrissey described the suspensions as temporary and reversible.

Our check of every programme page found more closures that matter to Indian applicants. The Business, Business - Accounting, Business Fundamentals and Professional Accounting Practice programmes, the three year Bachelor of Business Administration, both Electromechanical Engineering - Mechatronics programmes and Motive Power Technician - Truck and Coach are all marked currently not available for international students. The Bachelor of Applied Computing shows no intakes at present.

5. Engineering Technology and Skilled Trades

This is Cambrian’s strongest area for international students: every programme below is PGWP eligible, most run labs and shops on the Barrydowne campus, and several prepare you for licensing exams while you study, such as the TSSA gas technician certificates in HVAC.

Several of these include co-op or paid work terms, and the technician diplomas ladder into the matching three year technology diplomas. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technician, Heavy Equipment Technician and the carpentry programmes open for January 2027 only, so plan around that single window.

6. Health and Community Programmes

Cambrian’s health and community programmes are all PGWP eligible and all include placements, which need a police check with vulnerable sector screening, immunisations and first aid before you start. Massage Therapy and Child and Youth Care are compressed, packing three years of study into two, which is why their first year costs are higher.

The two Social Service Worker diplomas use the graduate certificate English standard of IELTS 6.5 rather than the usual diploma level, a rule that catches many applicants out.

7. Graduate Certificates

All 9 of Cambrian’s open graduate certificates are PGWP eligible. Most run two or three semesters, so each supports a permit of about eight months to a year, and many students pair one with a second eligible programme to build a longer permit.

Crime Analytics carries a note on its page that PGWP eligibility has been temporarily reinstated, so confirm its status on the day you apply. Business Analytics, often still listed by agents, has been replaced by Data Analytics.

8. Computing, Games and Media

Graphic Design, Media Communications and Game - Design and Simulation are PGWP eligible, while Animation, Design and Visual Arts and Art and Design Fundamentals are not. The computing diplomas require your own laptop to a stated specification, so budget for one before you arrive.

9. Degrees

Two honours degrees are open to international students. The Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing takes four years, asks Grade 12 English, Maths, Biology and Chemistry with about a 75 percent average, and leads to the NCLEX-RN exam; Cambrian notes that its PGWP eligibility is subject to programme benchmarks. The Honours Bachelor of Business Administration takes four years with co-op and asks 65 percent.

Degrees use the higher English standard and do not accept Duolingo. Their graduates need CLB 7 rather than CLB 5 for the PGWP.

10. Cambrian College Fees for International Students

Every Cambrian programme page shows an estimated first year cost for international students. Across the 57 programmes in this guide it runs from CAD 12,396 to CAD 29,150, and CAD 19,228 appears on 21 of them. Compressed programmes such as Massage Therapy and Child and Youth Care cost more in year one because they fit three semesters into it.

Older listings often quote Cambrian tuition at around CAD 14,600 to 15,000. Those figures are out of date or exclude compulsory fees; use the estimate on the current programme page when you plan your funds.

11. Scholarships

Cambrian does not publish an automatic entrance scholarship for international students on its international fees pages, unlike some other Ontario colleges. Awards and bursaries exist for enrolled students, but they are competitive and not guaranteed, so budget the full first year cost.

13. English Requirements

English for Academic Purposes needs no test: Cambrian places you in its Foundations, Level A or Level B stream with its own placement test. It is a useful route if your score falls short, but the EAP itself does not lead to a PGWP.

14. The Language Test for Your PGWP

Your admission score does not count at PGWP stage. IRCC asks for a fresh result, no more than two years old, at CLB 5 in every skill for college credentials and CLB 7 for degrees. Most Cambrian students book the test in their final semester in Sudbury.

15. Intakes for 2027

Cambrian’s Fall 2026 term is under way, so the open windows now run through 2027. Across the 57 programmes there are 71 intakes, and 44 programmes open only once in the year.

Cambrian charges a CAD 95 application fee. Its refund rules are clear and worth knowing before you pay.

17. Cost of Living in Sudbury

Sudbury is one of the more affordable Ontario cities for students. One bedroom apartments averaged about CAD 1,700 a month in September 2026 and two bedrooms about CAD 1,924, and most students share. Winters are long and cold, with temperatures well below minus 20 in January, so budget for proper winter clothing in your first month.

The study permit funds rule changed on 1 September 2026. A single applicant must show CAD 23,448 for living costs on top of first year fees and travel; a couple must show CAD 29,192.

18. Cambrian at Hanson: Why It Is Not in This Guide

For several years Cambrian delivered programmes in the Greater Toronto Area through Hanson College, a private partner. In February 2025 Hanson moved all Cambrian at Hanson teaching from Toronto to its Brampton campus, citing federal limits on new international students.

The bigger issue is the permit. IRCC ruled that students who begin a programme delivered through a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement on or after 1 September 2024 are not eligible for a PGWP. If an agent offers you Cambrian in Toronto or Brampton, ask exactly where you will be taught; only the Sudbury campus programmes in this guide carry the PGWP status shown here.

19. Bringing Your Family

A spouse or child can accompany you, but no Cambrian programme gives your partner an open work permit. Since January 2025 that benefit is limited to partners of master’s students in programmes of 16 months or more, doctoral students and a few professional degrees, and Cambrian awards none of them. Each family member also raises the funds you must show.

20. Rankings and Reputation

Colleges do not appear in world university rankings, so any rank quoted for Cambrian comes from web visibility indices. The more useful signals are Cambrian’s links with Northern Ontario employers in mining, energy and health care, its licensing preparation in the trades, and the 12 programmes in this guide that include co-op or paid work terms.

Cambrian suits you if

• You want a two or three year engineering technology or trades diploma with hands-on labs and a PGWP.
• You are heading for health or community services, where every open programme is PGWP eligible.
• You want a graduate certificate in data analytics, AI, cybersecurity or addictions and mental health.
• You prefer lower rent and a smaller city to the Greater Toronto Area.

Cambrian does not suit you if

• You are set on mining, power engineering, chemical engineering or animation and need a work permit.
• You want a business diploma, most of which are closed to international students.
• You need a scholarship to make the budget work.
• You cannot face a long northern winter.
