Mohawk College - Fennell

Mohawk College sells a two year twinning programme: two one year graduate certificates studied back to back, marketed on the promise of a three year post-graduation work permit. We checked all 53 pairings on offer against the college’s own PGWP list.

Fifteen of the 53 cannot deliver that permit. In each of them the second certificate is Human Resources Management, Project Management or Public Relations, and none of those three appears on the list Mohawk published in February 2026. IRCC only adds two programmes together when both are eligible, so a student who finishes one of these pairings has no permit route through the final certificate at all.

Almost no page that ranks for this college says so. Most describe twinning in one line and move on, and some list every pairing as though they were interchangeable. For the choice most Indian applicants actually make at Mohawk, that is the single most expensive thing to get wrong.

Mohawk is a public Ontario college based on the Hamilton Mountain, and its Fennell campus offers 141 programmes to international students: 53 twinning pairings, 42 diplomas, 23 advanced diplomas, 10 graduate certificates, 8 one year certificates, 4 bachelor degrees and an English for Academic Purposes programme.

Two further facts shape almost every application here.

Fifty eight of the 141 programmes do not lead to a PGWP. That includes the entire business administration family, accounting, marketing, paralegal, animation and game design. Mohawk’s strongest permit routes sit in engineering technology, computing, health and community services.

And the fast tracks are a trap for the unwary. Mohawk runs 14 fast track streams, 11 of them recorded at CAD 24,285, far above the two year version of the same diploma. Only 4 lead to a permit, and because those four run sixteen months rather than two years, the permit is shorter too.

1. The Twinning Question, Answered Properly

Twinning at Mohawk means applying once and earning two Ontario College Graduate Certificates over two years. Year one starts in September, or in January if your first certificate is Cyber Security Analytics or Supply Chain Management. Year two normally starts the following September.

Mohawk names seven certificates for twinning: Autism and Behavioural Science, Brain Disorders Management, Concurrent Disorders, Cyber Security Analytics, Digital Health, Mental Health and Disability Management, and Supply Chain Management. All seven are on its PGWP list. The fifteen weak pairings all end in a certificate from outside that group.

The three year claim rests on two years of study covered by one letter of acceptance. IRCC can base a permit on two eligible programmes of at least eight months each, completed within two years of each other. Mohawk itself says the length is at IRCC’s sole discretion, so read three years as possible rather than promised.

One pairing needs a separate check. Concurrent Disorders with Mental Health and Disability Management has been listed as a one year double certificate rather than a two year programme. If that is how Mohawk delivers it, the permit it supports would be far shorter than three years, so confirm the length before paying.

2. About Mohawk College

Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology is a public college founded in 1966 as part of Ontario’s college system. Its main campus is Fennell, on the Hamilton Mountain at 135 Fennell Avenue West, and every programme in this guide is taught there or through it.

The college also runs a skilled trades campus at Stoney Creek, an Institute for Applied Health Sciences in partnership with McMaster University, and a Centre for Aviation Technology at Hamilton International Airport, where the aviation technician programmes train. Mohawk describes itself as the largest trainer of apprentices in Ontario.

Its research profile is unusually strong for a college. In the 2025 Research Infosource ranking of Canada’s top research colleges, Mohawk placed second in Canada and first in Ontario.

3. Which Programmes Lead to a PGWP

Since November 2024, most college credentials below degree level only lead to a post-graduation work permit if their field of study appears on IRCC’s eligible list. In January 2026 IRCC announced that the list would stay frozen for the whole of 2026, with nothing added or removed.

Mohawk publishes its own version of that list with the code for each programme, last updated on 26 February 2026. We matched every programme in this guide against it.

Degrees are exempt from the field of study rule, which is why all four sustainability degrees qualify. Among the one year certificates, only the two pre-health pathways are on the list, and they would support a permit of roughly a year at most.

4. The 42 Programmes With No Work Permit

These are the standalone programmes that do not appear on Mohawk’s list. Several of them are among the most requested courses at the college, and some are still presented elsewhere as a route to Canadian work.

The pattern is consistent with IRCC’s wider cut. Business and administrative fields were largely removed from the eligible list in 2024 and 2025, while engineering technology, health, childcare and social services were kept or added. Eight programmes in this guide, including child and youth care, insurance, environmental technician and civil, mechanical and electrical engineering technology, only became eligible on 25 June 2025, so any older brochure that lists them as ineligible is out of date.

5. Fast Track: Faster, Dearer, and a Shorter Permit

Mohawk’s fast track streams compress a two year diploma into about sixteen months, or in two cases a three year advanced diploma into two years, by teaching through the summer. They mostly start in January. There are 14 of them, and the numbers deserve a close look.

A programme shorter than two years supports a PGWP only as long as the programme itself. A sixteen month fast track therefore points to a permit of about sixteen months, where the two year version of the same credential can support up to three years.

The other 10 fast tracks, from business administration to paralegal and legal office, carry no permit at all. Eleven of the 14 are recorded at CAD 24,285, so the premium for speed can exceed CAD 10,000 on a single year of tuition.

Fast track suits a student who already holds post-secondary study and wants the credential quickly. It rarely suits a student whose real goal is Canadian work experience.

6. Mohawk College Fees for International Students

Mohawk publishes its international tuition in three bands rather than programme by programme. The most recent official table, for 2025/26, is set out on a two semester basis:

The programme level figures recorded for this guide run from CAD 14,082 to CAD 26,310, and they do not map neatly onto those three bands. The most common figure is CAD 17,540, on 34 programmes, most of them twinning pairings. Fast tracks cluster at CAD 24,285, and certificates at CAD 16,190.

Treat the recorded fee as a guide and the fee on your letter of acceptance as the real number. Co-op terms and some programmes add compulsory fees on top.

7. Admission Requirements for Indian Students

Entry marks at Mohawk are low and flat. One hundred and thirty seven programmes ask 50 percent, and only the four sustainability degrees ask 65 percent. Where the real barrier sits is prior study and English, not marks.

For twinning in particular, look at year two before you commit. A commerce graduate can enter Supply Chain Management comfortably, but Mental Health and Disability Management gives preference to applicants from community or health services.

8. English Requirements in Full

Mohawk sets English by programme type, with a handful of health exceptions. The Duolingo English Test is accepted on 139 of the 141 programmes, and Mohawk sets a minimum for every band as well as the overall score.

The community services band covers Aviation Technician - Avionics Maintenance, Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood Education, Educational Support, Office Administration - Health Services, Recreation Therapy and Social Service Worker. The two paralegal streams ask 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band, and the pre-health pathway to certificates and diplomas asks 6.0 in every band.

In twinning, the stricter certificate sets the bar. Any pairing that includes Supply Chain Management, Human Resources Management, Project Management or Public Relations needs TOEFL 88 rather than 83.

9. The Second Language Test Nobody Mentions

Your admission test is not the last one. Since November 2024, every PGWP application needs a fresh language result at a Canadian Language Benchmark level, taken within two years of applying for the permit.

College graduates need CLB 5 in all four abilities. Degree graduates need CLB 7, which is a real step up. Budget time and money for this second test in your final semester, and keep in mind that an IELTS score from before you arrived will usually have expired by then.

10. The 45 Standalone Programmes That Qualify

These programmes appear on Mohawk’s PGWP list in their own right. The permit column reflects programme length: two years or more supports up to three years, and anything shorter supports a permit of about the same length.

11. The Four Sustainability Degrees

Mohawk’s School of Climate Action offers four bachelor degrees for international students: a Bachelor of Management and a Bachelor of Technology in sustainability, each in a three year form and a four year honours form. All four are recorded at CAD 18,870 and include a mandatory work experience term.

Degrees are the one place at Mohawk where the field of study rule does not apply, so all four support a PGWP of up to three years. The trade-off is a higher bar: 65 percent in Class 12, IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, and CLB 7 at the permit stage. If you plan a master degree later, the honours versions are the stronger credential.

12. Regulated Careers and Protected Titles

Several Mohawk programmes lead toward jobs that need a licence or registration in Ontario after graduation. The credential opens the door, but it is not the licence itself.

Note the overlap with the PGWP list. Paralegal and HR management are not on it, so a student could complete the credential and still have no permit to build the Canadian experience the licence expects.

13. Intakes and Deadlines

With September 2026 already under way, the next windows run from January 2027 to September 2028. Across the 141 programmes there are 419 open intake windows.

Programmes with a single September start deserve the most care: miss the deadline for animation, photography, recreation therapy, GIS or any twinning pairing led by a health certificate, and the next start is a year away. Ontario’s provincial attestation letters are also allocated through the college, so apply early rather than close to the deadline.

14. Payment, Refunds and the CAD 250 Rule

Mohawk does not issue a letter of acceptance on a small deposit. It asks for the full first semester of tuition before it releases the acceptance letter and the provincial attestation letter you need for the study permit.

If your study permit is refused, Mohawk refunds the tuition you paid less a CAD 250 administrative fee. The request must reach the college within 60 days of the programme start date on your latest acceptance letter, with the refusal letter uploaded. A refusal from an earlier term will not count.

Withdrawing for any other reason is far more expensive. Mohawk keeps a CAD 2,450 non-refundable administrative fee, and the request must be made within ten days of the start date. Deferral is possible if your visa is refused or delayed, within the same academic year and up to three intakes, once first semester fees are paid.

15. Scholarships: What Is Actually Available

Mohawk does not offer an automatic entrance scholarship to international students, and no programme in this guide carries one. Pages that promise a fixed award on admission are describing something the college does not publish.

What Mohawk does run is a large programme of awards and bursaries for enrolled students, including an international bursary and awards tied to individual programmes. They are competitive, many depend on your grades once you are studying, and none can be counted on when you plan your first year. Budget the full tuition and treat any award as a bonus.

16. Cost of Living in Hamilton

Hamilton sits about an hour from Toronto and is noticeably cheaper to live in, though rents have risen quickly. In July 2026 the average asking rent for a one bedroom apartment in the city was about CAD 1,654 a month. Most students share, which brings the cost of a room well below that.

For the study permit itself, IRCC raised the living cost figure on 1 September 2026. A single applicant now needs to show CAD 23,448 for living expenses, on top of the first year of tuition and travel.

17. Rankings and Reputation

Mohawk does not appear in world university rankings, because those rankings measure universities rather than colleges. Figures that give it a global position come from aggregator sites using their own methods, not from a recognised ranking.

The measures that do apply to Ontario colleges are research and outcomes. On research, Mohawk placed second in Canada and first in Ontario in the 2025 Research Infosource list, and it ranks first nationally for research income among large colleges. For programme quality, the practical questions are whether the programme is on the PGWP list, whether it has co-op, and whether it leads to a recognised licence. Twenty programmes in this guide include a co-op term, mandatory or optional.

18. Can You Bring Your Family?

You can apply with your family, but your spouse will not get an open work permit on the strength of a Mohawk programme. Since January 2025, IRCC limits spousal open work permits for students to master and doctoral programmes of sixteen months or more and a short list of professional degrees. None of Mohawk’s certificates, diplomas or bachelor degrees qualify.

A family also raises the proof of funds. On the figures in force from 1 September 2026, two people need CAD 29,192 for living costs, before tuition.

• You want a two year route to a three year permit through one of the 38 twinning pairings built from Mohawk’s seven named certificates.
• You are drawn to engineering technology, computing, aviation or health, where Mohawk’s permit routes are strongest.
• Your marks are modest: 50 percent opens almost every programme.
• You prefer a city cheaper than Toronto but within an hour of it.

It does not suit you if

• You want business administration, accounting, marketing or project management and need Canadian work afterwards.
• You are considering a fast track mainly to save time, without checking the shorter permit.
• You need your spouse to work while you study.
• You are counting on an entrance scholarship.
