Bangor University charges no application fee on any of its 271 courses and asks for no GMAT or GRE anywhere. It also runs 32 teacher training routes, and 20 of its courses are taught through the medium of Welsh, which means a student who meets every English requirement listed can still be ineligible.

That last point appears on none of the pages currently competing for this search, and it is the single most likely reason a well-prepared application here fails.

What follows is built from all 271 programmes open to international students, checked one by one against Bangor’s own published fee bands.

🎓 Quick Fact: Bangor is ranked 531 to 540 in the QS World University Rankings 2026. One site aimed at international students simultaneously calls it the top university in the UK and 15th best in the UK, and claims it is 1st in the UK for Medicine and Dentistry. Section 16 explains what those claims are actually measuring.

1. About Bangor University

Bangor was founded in 1884 and received its Royal Charter in 1885, making it one of the oldest universities in Wales. It sits on the north Wales coast between the Menai Strait and Snowdonia, and teaches around 11,000 students, of whom more than 2,500 are international.

2. Bangor University Rankings 2026

Ranking Position
QS World University Rankings 2026 531 to 540 globally
Guardian University Guide 2026 62nd of 123 in the UK, up 11 places
Within Wales Joint 4th, behind Swansea, Cardiff and South Wales
Teaching Excellence Framework Gold
Ocean sciences research Reported as 1st in the UK
✅ The Guardian rise is the more meaningful number. Bangor climbed 11 places to 62nd, and within that its teaching satisfaction score rose 18 positions. Teaching quality is what you actually experience for three years, and a TEF Gold rating alongside that rise says more about the student experience than a global research ranking does.

3. What Is Bangor Known For?

  • Ocean and marine science. Bangor sits on the Menai Strait with its own marine station and research vessel, and reports being 1st in the UK for ocean sciences research. Fourteen courses carry marine or ocean in the title.
  • Banking and finance. A dedicated banking research centre, unusual for a university of this size, supporting a cluster that includes Islamic banking and a Chartered Banker route.
  • Zoology. Sixteen zoology courses including named specialisms in herpetology, ornithology and primatology, which are genuinely rare as undergraduate degrees in Britain.
  • Teacher training. Thirty two PGCE routes across primary and secondary, in both English and Welsh medium.
  • Psychology. A long established research school with its own brain imaging facility, feeding masters and a doctorate.
  • Forestry and conservation. One of the few British universities teaching forestry as a full degree, with Snowdonia on the doorstep.

4. Bangor Courses for International Students

Level Count Entry from
Three year bachelor degrees 116 Class 12 at 70 percent
Master degrees 92 A bachelor degree at 60 or 70 percent
PGCE teacher training 32 A bachelor degree at 60 percent
Integrated masters, four years 19 Class 12, finishing at master level
Four year bachelor degrees 9 Class 12, usually with a year abroad
Top-up degree, PhD, ESL 3 One each

Within that, 15 courses include a foundation year and 19 are integrated masters. Browse every course with its exact fee and entry requirement on our Bangor courses and fees page.

5. The Welsh Language Question

This is the section that has no equivalent on any competing page, and it can decide your eligibility.

Bangor sits in a genuinely Welsh speaking region, and 20 of its 271 courses are delivered and assessed through the medium of Welsh. On those courses, Welsh competence is a practical requirement in addition to the English test.

⚠️ Meeting IELTS 7.0 does not make you eligible for a Welsh medium course. The affected routes include 13 Welsh medium PGCEs, a Welsh medium Product Design degree, Primary Education, Childhood Studies and a Creative Writing master. For the science PGCEs it is not conversational Welsh that is needed but the technical vocabulary of the subject in Welsh, and for Design and Technology and Outdoor Activities, safety instructions must be delivered fluently under pressure. Check the medium of instruction before you apply.
✅ Two exceptions worth knowing. The BA Welsh for First and Second Language Students is explicitly designed for learners as well as native speakers, so it is genuinely open. And where a Welsh medium route exists alongside an English one, the Welsh version is often markedly less competitive: Welsh medium Physical Education, Mathematics and Physics combine a shortage subject with a shortage language, which makes them among the strongest employment prospects in the catalogue for anyone who speaks Welsh.

6. What Is the Bangor Acceptance Rate?

Bangor does not publish one, and the pages that promise it generally do not deliver it. One large comparison site displays an acceptance rate field that is simply blank until you register an account.

⚠️ What actually decides your application. Bangor states its requirement per course, and across the 271 the split is clear: 139 courses ask 70 percent and 129 ask 60 percent. Meet the number attached to your course, present clean documents and adequate funding, and you are in a strong position. Two outliers exist at the accessible end: MSc Computing asks 55 percent, the lowest postgraduate bar here, and the PhD asks 50 percent of a completed master.

7. Bangor Admission Requirements for Indian Students

You need Courses Which
70 percent 139 Most bachelor degrees and research masters
60 percent 129 Most taught masters, all 32 PGCEs, integrated masters
50 to 55 percent 3 MSc Computing, the PhD, and the pre-sessional English course

There is no GMAT or GRE requirement on any of the 271 courses, and no application fee, so applying costs you nothing.

8. Bangor English Language Requirements

Band Courses IELTS TOEFL PTE Duolingo
Standard 205 6.0, none below 5.5 75 56 105
High 33 (+2 variant) 7.0, none below 6.5 85 72 130
Middle 29 (+1 variant) 6.5, none below 6.0 85 62 120
Pre-sessional English 1 4.0 32 30 Not accepted

Two further bands cover three courses that mix these thresholds. Duolingo is accepted on 270 of the 271 courses, which is useful because it is cheaper and quicker to book than IELTS.

⚠️ The IELTS 7.0 band is larger than it looks. All 32 PGCEs sit in it, because classroom communication is assessed throughout the school placements. So does MSc Adult Nursing and MSc Counselling. If teaching, nursing or counselling is your goal, plan for 7.0 from the start rather than discovering it late.

9. Bangor Fees for International Students 2026

Bangor prices by subject band rather than by course, which makes the structure unusually predictable once you know which band your subject sits in.

Official band Annual fee Subjects
Band A GBP 18,000 Arts and humanities, education, law, study abroad
Band B GBP 19,000 Business, linguistics, music, accounting and finance, sport science
Band C GBP 20,000 Biological sciences, computer science, environmental science and forestry, geography, zoology
Band D GBP 21,000 Design, electronic engineering, medical sciences, ocean sciences, psychology, nursing

Across our 271 course records the most common figures are GBP 17,000 on 57 courses, 19,000 on 54, 18,000 on 44 and 16,500 on 33, the last being the PGCE rate. The range runs from GBP 3,700 for pre-sessional English to GBP 24,500 for the MSc by Research in Clinical Sciences.

✅ The placement year costs almost nothing. Bangor charges a tuition fee of just GBP 1,350 for an International Experience Year or a Placement Year. Against a normal year of GBP 18,000 to 21,000, that is a remarkable difference, and it makes a year in industry or abroad far more affordable here than at most British universities. Check whether your course offers one.

10. Cost of Living in Bangor

This is Bangor’s strongest practical advantage and the reason its total cost undercuts most of urban Britain.

Item Approximate monthly cost (GBP)
Room in shared or university accommodation 400 to 650
Food and groceries 160 to 250
Transport, phone and miscellaneous 100 to 180
Realistic annual total 8,000 to 12,000

That is roughly GBP 6,000 a year below London. Bangor is a small coastal city, which keeps rent low and puts most of the campus within walking distance, but it also means fewer part time jobs than a large city offers.

Budget separately for the Immigration Health Surcharge, paid upfront for the full length of your visa, and the visa fee itself.

11. Bangor Intakes and Deadlines

Intake Courses offering it
September 268 of 271
January 46
October and eight other months Smaller numbers, mostly research degrees
⚠️ Bangor is overwhelmingly a September university. Only 46 of 271 courses offer a January start. If your results, funding or visa decision slips past September, you will most likely wait a full year rather than a term. Two courses have a single entry window a year, where a missed deadline costs twelve months outright. Apply eight to ten months ahead.

The research degrees are the exception. The MSc by Research in Biological Sciences lists 15 entry windows and the pre-sessional English course lists 17, which is genuine flexibility if a research route suits you.

12. The UK Graduate Route at Bangor

Two hundred and seventy of the 271 courses are degrees or degree level qualifications, so they support a Graduate Route application: two years of unsponsored work in Britain after you finish, or three after a doctorate. No job offer or sponsor is needed, but you must be inside the UK on a valid student visa when you apply.

⚠️ Two exceptions. The pre-sessional English course supports no Graduate Route at all, because English language study is not a degree however long it runs. And no taught course allows dependants: UK rules from January 2024 bar a spouse or children. The single exception is the PhD in Psychology, which as a research doctorate permits dependants and carries three years of Graduate Route rather than two. If a family move matters, that is the only route here that supports it.

13. Teacher Training: 32 PGCE Routes

Bangor runs 32 PGCEs, which is a substantial teacher training operation and the largest single block in this catalogue. All ask IELTS 7.0, carry enhanced background checks and cost GBP 16,500.

Subject Recruitment position
Mathematics, physics, chemistry Persistent British shortage subjects. Recruitment is more accessible
Modern languages, design and technology Also shortage areas, with practical competence required
English, history, physical education Oversubscribed. A strong subject degree matters more
Welsh medium routes, 13 of them Least competitive, but require classroom fluency in Welsh
⚠️ A PGCE is the only route here that confers qualified teacher status. Bangor also offers Education Studies, Childhood and Youth Studies, Primary Education and Music with Education, and none of those qualifies you to teach in a British state school. If teaching is the goal, the PGCE is the qualification. International applicants should confirm eligibility, funding and whether a British PGCE is recognised in their home country before enrolling.

14. Foundation Years and the Year Abroad

Fifteen courses include a foundation year, adding a fourth year that builds the subject background direct entry assumes: mathematics for computing and engineering, sciences for biology and medical sciences, essay technique for humanities.

The foundation year adds a full year of tuition and living costs, so compare the total against direct entry elsewhere before committing.

⚠️ The year abroad needs its own visa. Nine four year degrees, mostly in the modern languages family, normally include a year abroad. Study in the host country requires separate immigration permission from your UK student visa. The same applies to the SUFONAMA forestry master, an Erasmus Mundus joint programme delivered across partner European universities, where each country needs its own permission. Confirm the full visa sequence in writing before accepting a place.

15. Protected Titles: Read This Before You Apply

Course What it does not do
Professional Policing, GBP 15,000 Does not confer eligibility to serve. UK forces require citizenship or settled status plus multi year residency. Target corporate security and fraud investigation instead
English Language for Speech and Language Therapy Preparation for the profession, not a qualification in it. Practice requires a separate accredited qualification and HCPC registration
Medical Sciences and Biomedical Science Not medical degrees. UK medical training needs a separate application to a medical school. Biomedical scientist is a protected title requiring HCPC registration
LLB Law and the LLM Do not confer the right to practise. Solicitors need the SQE plus two years of qualifying work experience
MSc Adult Nursing Requires Nursing and Midwifery Council registration, assessed separately. Clinical placement capacity for international students should be confirmed in writing first
Psychology degrees, especially joint ones Professional routes need British Psychological Society accreditation, which joint degrees often do not carry. Clinical psychology needs a separate doctorate
MSc Counselling Counselling practice depends on voluntary professional body registration. Confirm which body accredits the course

16. What Other Bangor Pages Get Wrong

Claim you will see The actual position
“Top university in the UK” and “15th best in the UK” Both appear on the same page, sourced to a review aggregator rather than a recognised ranking. The Guardian places Bangor 62nd of 123 and QS at 531 to 540 globally
“1st in the UK for Medicine and Dentistry” This measures student satisfaction in that aggregator, not clinical training quality. Do not read it as a route into medicine, which Bangor does not offer as a standalone degree
Undergraduate tuition of “GBP 15,000 to 18,000” Bangor’s own published bands run GBP 18,000 to 21,000 for September 2026 undergraduate entry. The lower figure understates a science or engineering degree by up to GBP 6,000
Average tuition of “GBP 16,437.50” An average across courses is not a fee you can budget on. Bangor prices by subject band, so what matters is which band your subject sits in
Student numbers of 11,000, and 8,802 Two widely read sites, a gap of more than 2,000 students. Neither is sourced
Nothing at all about Welsh medium delivery None of the pages we reviewed mentions that 20 courses require Welsh language competence. It is the most consequential eligibility fact about this university

17. How to Apply to Bangor University

Applying through the Apply Study Visa portal is free, and since Bangor charges no application fee the whole process costs you nothing.

  1. Check the medium of instruction first. This is step one at Bangor specifically. Twenty courses are taught through Welsh, and no English test makes you eligible for them.
  2. Choose your course on our portal. We confirm the exact entry percentage, since 139 courses ask 70 percent and 129 ask 60.
  3. Upload your documents online. We check your band scores, not just your overall, because 35 courses need IELTS 7.0 with nothing below 6.5.
  4. We map the alternatives. If your marks fall short, we compare the 15 foundation routes and the courses at 55 and 60 percent.
  5. We submit at no cost, then guide you through the offer, the CAS, financial evidence and the UK student visa as one process.

The three costly mistakes at Bangor are applying to a Welsh medium course without Welsh, missing September when only 46 courses offer January, and choosing an education degree expecting it to qualify you to teach. Each is avoidable with one conversation. Check your eligibility for Bangor free, or read our UK student visa guide if funds are your next step.

18. Is Bangor Good for Indian Students?

Bangor suits a specific profile well. If you want British study at genuinely low living costs, if you value teaching quality over global research prestige, and if your subject is one Bangor is actually known for, it lines up sensibly. TEF Gold, an 11 place rise in the Guardian, and living costs around GBP 6,000 a year below London are real advantages.

The counterweights are that it is a small city with fewer part time jobs, that only 46 courses offer January, and that global rankings are modest if that matters to your employer or family.

It suits you if

  • Your Class 12 or degree is at 60 or 70 percent, matching one of the two main bands.
  • You want ocean science, marine biology, zoology, banking, forestry or psychology, where Bangor is genuinely strong.
  • You want a PGCE, and can meet IELTS 7.0.
  • You want low living costs and a compact walkable campus.
  • You want a placement or year abroad at GBP 1,350 rather than a full year of fees.
  • Your timeline fits a September start.

It does not suit you if

  • You are drawn to a Welsh medium course without Welsh language competence.
  • You need a January start and your course is not among the 46.
  • You need to bring a spouse or children. Only the PhD allows it.
  • You want a large city with extensive part time work.
  • Global ranking prestige is your priority.
  • You want a protected profession such as medicine or UK policing without checking the route first.

19. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Does Bangor University charge an application fee?

No. All 271 courses have a zero application fee, and there is no GMAT or GRE requirement anywhere. Applying through Apply Study Visa is also free.

Q: Are any Bangor courses taught in Welsh?

Yes. Twenty of the 271 courses are delivered and assessed through the medium of Welsh, including 13 PGCEs. Welsh competence is required in addition to the English test, so meeting IELTS alone does not make you eligible.

Q: What is the Bangor University acceptance rate?

Bangor does not publish one, and one large comparison site leaves the field blank until you register. What decides your application is the requirement on your course: 139 ask 70 percent and 129 ask 60 percent.

Q: What are Bangor fees for international students?

Bangor prices by subject band: GBP 18,000 for arts, humanities, education and law; 19,000 for business, music and sport science; 20,000 for sciences and zoology; and 21,000 for engineering, psychology, ocean sciences and nursing.

Q: What IELTS score does Bangor require?

Q: How many intakes does Bangor have?

September runs on 268 of 271 courses but January on only 46. Research degrees are more flexible, with one listing 15 entry windows. Two courses have a single window a year.

Q: Is Bangor University eligible for the UK Graduate Route?

Yes on 270 of 271 courses, giving two years of unsponsored work, or three after a doctorate. The pre-sessional English course carries no Graduate Route, since English language study is not a degree.

Q: Can I bring my spouse to Bangor?

Only on the PhD in Psychology. UK rules from January 2024 bar dependants on taught courses, and the doctorate is the single research route in this catalogue.

Q: What is Bangor University known for?

Ocean and marine science, reported as 1st in the UK for ocean sciences research, with its own marine station and research vessel. Also banking and finance, 16 zoology courses including rare specialisms, psychology, and forestry.

Q: How much does a placement year cost at Bangor?

GBP 1,350 for an International Experience Year or Placement Year, against a normal year of GBP 18,000 to 21,000. That makes a year in industry or abroad far more affordable here than at most British universities.

Q: Does an education degree at Bangor let me teach in the UK?

Only the PGCE confers qualified teacher status. Education Studies, Childhood and Youth Studies and Primary Education do not, despite their names. Bangor offers 32 PGCE routes, all requiring IELTS 7.0.

Q: What is the cost of living in Bangor?

Plan GBP 8,000 to 12,000 a year, roughly GBP 6,000 below London. It is a small coastal city, which keeps rent low but also means fewer part time jobs than a large city.

Q: Does Apply Study Visa charge for Bangor applications?

No. Counselling, application review and submission are free, including the medium of instruction check and the band score review. We are paid by the institutions we work with, which is exactly why we will tell you plainly when a course carries a risk.

✅ Confirm before you pay. Confirm the medium of instruction, since 20 courses are taught through Welsh. Confirm the exact entry percentage and English band for your course in writing. Confirm that no taught course supports dependants. If your course leads toward a regulated profession or includes a year abroad, confirm the registration route or the host country visa separately. Course details cover all 271 routes open to international applicants and were checked in September 2026. Tuition, visa fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge are revised regularly.
