First, the Rule Change That Helps You: SDS Is Gone
Until late 2024, the fast-track SDS route effectively demanded IELTS 6.0 in each band a single 5.5 pushed you out of SDS into slower processing, and many students treated "6.0 each" as an unofficial visa requirement.
That era is over. SDS was discontinued on 8 November 2024, and every applicant now goes through the Regular Stream where IRCC itself sets no IELTS minimum for the study permit. The English requirement that governs your application is now your college's admission requirement, stated on your offer letter. If a public college admits you with 6.0 overall (5.5 in a band), that satisfies the language component of your file.
Two honest caveats before you celebrate:
- The visa officer still reads your whole profile. A lower language score alongside weak academics, an unexplained gap, and a mismatched program paints a risky picture. The score isn't the problem; the story is.

Getting admitted with 6.0 is only half the plan. Since November 2024, the Post-Graduation Work Permit has a separate language requirement you must meet at graduation:
- College diploma/certificate graduates: CLB 5 in all four skills (roughly IELTS General Training 5.0 in listening/speaking/writing, 4.0 in reading)
- Degree graduates: CLB 7 (IELTS General Training 6.0 in each band)
- Your test must be valid (within 2 years) when you apply for the PGWP meaning the IELTS you used for admission will almost certainly be expired by graduation, and you'll take a fresh test (IELTS General Training, CELPIP, or PTE Core)
For a diploma student, CLB 5 is very achievable but it's a real step you must plan and budget for.
