If you are applying to the University of Gloucestershire with a Duolingo score in hand, stop reading everything else and read this first.

Duolingo is not accepted on a single one of the 91 courses at the Oxstalls campus. Not on the undergraduate degrees, not on the MBAs, not on the research masters, not even on the Pre-Sessional English course. We checked all 91 individually. It offers 91 courses to international students: 57 bachelor degrees, 29 masters, three postgraduate diplomas, one doctorate and one English language course. Fees run from GBP 2,900 to GBP 22,660, and 43 of the 91 sit at exactly GBP 17,950, which makes budgeting unusually predictable.

Two more things are worth knowing before you compare this university with any other.

There is an India-specific scholarship worth GBP 4,000 to GBP 5,000, awarded automatically with no separate application. Most pages covering Gloucestershire quote the generic GBP 1,500 Global Scholarship or the competitive GBP 7,500 merit award. The India award sits between them, requires no application form, and is worth roughly a quarter of the tuition on a typical course here.

And a one year top-up degree earns exactly the same two year Graduate Route as a three year degree. The cheapest masters completion here costs GBP 6,175. The standard undergraduate degree costs GBP 17,950 a year for three years. Both produce a British qualification and both open the same post-study work rights. If you already hold a diploma, that arithmetic deserves your attention.

1. About Oxstalls and the University of Gloucestershire

The university traces its roots to a teacher training college founded in Cheltenham in the nineteenth century, becoming the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in 1990 and receiving university status in 2001. It runs campuses across Cheltenham and Gloucester, of which Oxstalls is the Gloucester site.

A top-up enters you directly into the final year, using a diploma you already hold for the earlier stages. The MBA top-up at GBP 6,350 is roughly a third of the full MBA price, and it produces the same qualification.

6. The Graduate Route and Who Gets Three Years

The UK Graduate Route gives international graduates two years of unsponsored work after finishing a degree, with no job offer or employer sponsorship needed. You must be inside the UK on a valid student visa when you apply.

Oxstalls is the university’s sport campus, and 22 of the 91 courses are sport related, from performance analysis to strength and conditioning to sport business management.

Sport business management is the dearest undergraduate course here at GBP 18,850, available in standard, placement, foundation and high performance leadership versions. Sport science, coaching, strength and conditioning, physical education and sports therapy each have their own degree and most have a foundation route too.

1. Do not book a Duolingo test. It is accepted on none of the 91 courses here.

For the right applicant this is strong value. Forty five courses ask 65 percent and fifteen ask 50, the English bar sits at IELTS 6.0 for 75 of the 91, there is no application fee, the India Scholarship is automatic, and living costs in Gloucester are well below the big British cities. Every degree carries the full Graduate Route.

The constraints are specific rather than general: Duolingo is refused outright, 90 of 91 courses bar dependants, and September dominates the calendar so heavily that missing it usually costs a year.

It suits you if

• You want business, sport or health, which is what this campus concentrates on.
• You hold a diploma and a top-up would give you a British qualification in a year.
• Your marks are around 50 to 65 percent and you need an accessible route.
• You have an MOI letter from a top 100 NIRF institution.
• You want lower living costs than London, Manchester or Birmingham.

It does not suit you if

• You have taken or planned a Duolingo test.
• You need to bring a spouse or child, unless you take the doctorate.
• You need a January start on an undergraduate degree. Most are September only.
• You want a large city with a big part time job market.
• You are chasing rankings above all else. This is a modern university, not a Russell Group one.
